A Most Blustery Day.

Some of you may well know that I am trying to reignite my modelling antics. I've done a fair bit in the past and got busy this summer being an Atomic Bombshell. It is something I would really like to do more of in the future, especially now I am back in the south and can get out and about more.

So, last Friday I had a shoot planned with two photographers. Well, actually it was originally just the one but Annette came along too to snap some extras. I have yet to receive Annette's photos (she's a very busy lady!) but here are Ray Haynes' shots.

The shoot took place on Weston Shore, in Netley and on Southampton Common as they provided us with some amazing natural backdrops.

I wore a two outfits consisting of:

• Skirt from Shanghai Lil

• Scarf from Accessorize (I think...)
• Dungarees from Freddies of Pinewood
• Jumper from Topshop
• Boots from Jones'
• Jacket from a kilo sale

Peach Melba

Remember how I dyed my hair orange, pink and red a few weeks back? Well it's faded out to this amazing collection of colours! I'm appreciating it whilst it lasts though because with every wash it gets lighter and lighter!

I'm thinking I'm going to keep with this ginger theme and get it professionally dyed to some form of auburn shade for the winter.

I love the streaks of pink that flash through the orange

Roots need a major revamp though!

Waves On D-Day.

Phew! I have been working my little tush off recently! Yesterday I completed my dissertation - all 9,562 words of it! That's not to say my toils are over, I still have two more massive assignments to complete, but come the 22nd May I will have completed my university life and will be out there in the big wide world.

Here it is, my finished baby...

In other news, I tried out a new hair set this week and utterly fell in love with the results. It is much looser than the more 50s style I usually wear but is just as elegant. I think it has quite a late 30s early 40s vibe to it which is something I've never achieved before. I used bigger foam rollers (I'm going to guess they're about 1.5") and set them around the base of my head at the back, and then in two rows on the heavy side of my hair so I could structure in the wave the next day. It's the first time I've set a successful finger wave so I was pretty chuffed - the photos really don't do it justice!

Definitely trying this set again soon - I might even do a tutorial for it over on my Youtube channel!

Perfect Pin Up Hair Brought To You By Bettina May

I have been slightly aware that this tutorial exists but for some reason it had been pushed to the back of my mind. Surfing through the realms of Youtube the other night I came across Bettina May and Go-Go Amy's Pin Up hair tutorial and it all came back to me! I've watched the make up version before and searched for the hair tutorial but my quest was always unsuccessful - until now!

Bettina May is the perfect teacher for beginners as the 45 minute tutorial goes through step by step to create several vintage pin up looks. She shows you how to set the rollers, how to brush them out, and how to style them all with a lovely smile. This is definitely worth a watch if you're a beginner in vintage hair styling, or just want to perfect your skills.

1950s Page Boy Hair - How To

This is probably the most iconic 1950s hairstyle as it's most famous sporter was, of course, Marilyn Monroe. It's always my 'go to' style when I want to set my hair with pin curls (you can do it with rollers too - I shall probably do a How To video on that too) and I've now got the technique down to my best ability so I'm pretty pleased with how the style came out today.

Also, my hair has been pink for two weeks (almost!) now and I think the hair dye has lasted pretty decently! I haven't reviewed the product yet because I'm waiting for it to completely fade but don't fear, there will be a write up!

How Did You Do Your Fringe?

Imelda May works this style the best and has brought it to the mainstream



It's a question I get asked whenever I wear my fringe/bangs rolled up so I thought I'd show ya'll my interpretation on how to achieve this look. It can be done on any length of hair as long as the piece of hair to be rolled reaches around your eyeline - so a long blunt fringe, a side fringe or just a long piece of hair from the front of your face would work.

First up is how to create the look from wet; I find this look is a lot kinder on my hair but doesn't have the staying power of the style created from dry hair (I usually have to re-roll it the next day and add some more spray).

The style on dry hair is just as quick to create and takes about two minutes once you've got the hang of the technique. Like I said above it is quite harsh on the hair so I wouldn't recommend doing it too often - plus its a pain to brush out when you want to restyle your hair! Because it has so much back combing the style's staying power is a lot longer and generally can stay in until you want to take it out.

Vintage Hair Lounge

In January I was sat at my laptop when up popped an email; my regular newsletter from Besame Cosmetics was here! At the bottom I read about how they had a new stockists at Vintage Hair Lounge which excited me greatly! After a few prayers to the gods of all things vintage and glamour I clicked the link to their website and jumped for joy at seeing their salon would be at Southampton!

I quickly headed down to where they said the salon would be but was disheartened when I saw the salon was empty and, practically, a building site. However there was a sign on the glass door saying that they had a temporary base in the Bargate Shopping Centre. Soon I took another trip and met the owners, mother and daughter team, Gloria and Sharon Holloway, who were just as lovely and amazing as I imagined! We talked for hours and have now become good friends with the both of them.

Their theme of 'Keep Calm and Carry On' was their backbone of morale during this time and was celebrated at their Tea Party in August. Here ladies and gents discussed all things vintage whilst the ivories were tinkered in the background. Stall holders could sell their wares, including Besame Cosmetics and Dolly Cool jewellary whilst the salon took bookings for cuts and stylings.

The ladies were invited to be a part of the very first Vintage @ Goodwood, which was another roaring success and were later asked back for Goodwood Revival, so it can safely be said that these ladies are making names for themselves!

The salon stayed in the Bargate Centre for a few months until October 2010 when they moved into their fantastic salon at Kimber House, 118 High Street. Now they are set up and business is booming with beautiful VE Day themed window displays adding something eye-catching and different to Southampton's highstreet.

Call in and book an appointment! You won't be disappointed! With their specialisation ranging from the 1920s til modern, and Sharon's background in theatrical cosmetology they can make you into anything from Greta Garbo, to Marilyn Monroe to the Bride of Frankenstein!
